The World Water Forum, the largest event in the water sector in the world, is organised every three years in collaboration with the World Water Council and the government of the host country. The forum is not only a week-long event. Above all, it is a process that aims at giving greater visibility to water issues; raising awareness and understanding around them. This process aims at proposing concrete solutions to meet global challenges.

It also works to bring water to the forefront of international political debate. A step towards global collaboration on water resource-related problems, the forum offers the water sector and political decision makers from the world over a unique opportunity to get together to build contacts, exchange ideas and attempt to find solutions to guarantee water security.

With the theme "Bridging Divides for Water", the 5th World Water Forum will be held in Istanbul, Turkey from 16 to 22 March 2009.
