The first International «Water and Film» Events were held in Mexico in March 2006 during the 4th World Water Forum. It was a joint initiative of the International Secretariat for Water and the French Water Academy with the collaboration of the World Water Council (WWC), the Mexican water authority CONAGUA, the Cineteca Nacional of Mexico and of bilateral and multilateral institutions. The objectives were to enhance the programme of the world water forums by raising public awareness of the challenges involved in water management and to promote the production of audiovisual material on water and enrich image banks.

Thanks to the success of the first edition of the International Water and Film Events, the results of which were presented at the Zaragoza Expo Water Tribune cinema, we received more than 400 films for the 2nd edition, sent from the four corners of the Earth (30 countries). 110 were selected and 56 films from 23 countries were entered into the competitions.

Under the general theme of «Water, People and Sustainable Development» the films in competition were very good quality and varied, both in cultural and thematic terms.

There were three categories of film:
  • clips of less than 90 seconds for young people aged between 17 and 30.
  • films of less than 60 minutes (documentaries, animated films, works of fiction)
  • scientific and educational films

Three special prizes were also awarded:
  • The «Climate Change» Prize,
  • The «WASH water supply, sanitation and hygiene» Prize,
  • The «Personal Stories» Prize.
  •  A special IWFE recognition was awarded.
